Elevator Baby: Timini Egbuson, Lagos Woes and Everything In Between!

Growing up in Lagos, there were certain names that always made the rounds. Timini Egbuson was one of them.

The “Unilag big boy” was always on some Uni Awards list and no party was complete without him and his crew.

So when I heard he was going into acting, I almost didn’t take him seriously. I mean, his older sister is a successful actress and it sort of seemed like an easy pass but boy was I far from right.

From his stint on Tinsel to his recurring roles on MTV Shuga, Fifty and Skinny Girl In Transit I started to see that there was more to this young actor.

And what broke the Camel’s back for me? Elevator Baby.

If you’ve seen the movie you will understand that while it not only featured exceptional acting from Shaffy Bello, Toyin Aimakhu and, of course, Timini Egbuson, it is a concise story that alludes to a lot of things that are wrong with Nigeria.

From our incessant power outages, to our little to no maintenance culture and of course traffic grids, Elevator Baby shines the light on how it is only the Grace of God that saves us in Nigeria.

I also have to give kudos to Toyin Aimakhu. While it’s never easy to successfully pull off the role of a pregnant woman, Toyin did so whilst heavily pregnant. I mean, that moment when she revealed her bump without a care in the world? The woman is pure gold!

With short bursts of comic relief from characters like Broda Shaggi and Emem Ufot and dramatic inserts from Shaffy Bello and Toyin Aimakhu, Elevator Baby is far from the typical “nollywood movie”, every young Nigerian millennial has now come to loathe.

Without giving too much away, I would say to spend your Friday night watching the very reason why Timini has proven his right to be in the big leagues. And by the way, did I mention that the performance earned him and Toyin Aimakhu an AMVCA?

Well yeah, that’s another reason to see it!

Enjoy.
